Cornerstone was pleased to be a sponsor Hopkinsville-Christian County’s first-ever chess tournament. The tournament was targeted to Christian County middle schools’ chess clubs but high school students were also allowed to participate. It was held at North Drive Middle School. The tournament was played in a four-round Swiss-style competition, with trophies awarded first-, second- and third-place winners.
According to Laura Faulkner, Inner-City REZ Program Coordinator and co-organizer of the event, “We’re trying to build up the clubs so kids have something positive to be a part of that helps with their reading comprehension and their test scores and their problem-solving skills.”
Cornerstone employees Josh Hicks and Matt St.Martin volunteered time during the event to help with logistics and to encourage the participants.
David Smith, Cornerstone CEO & President said, “We appreciate the analytical skills that develop in youth when learning and playing chess and appreciate the efforts the city is making to offer fun, learning opportunities for students.
We were happy to sign on as a sponsor of the inaugural event.”
